Battle Tree Warden – Dr Andrew Barton
Tree lovers campaign sparked a movement; back in 1973 ‘plant a tree in 73’ campaign resulted in the birth of The Tree Council and National Tree week (last week of November) and then the Tree Warden Scheme. In 2023 (50th anniversary) the campaign ‘Grow a Tree in 23’ again highlighted the importance of Trees.
Dr Andrew Barton is the Battle Tree Warden and has an interest in trees that started in 1996 when he was one of the founders and chair of the “Tree Trust for Haringey” charity in north London. He moved to Battle in 2020 during the Covid pandemic when, due to lockdown, he realised how much he missed the trees as movement out of his home was restricted. During this time people have come to understand the need for nature for their health & wellbeing. Trees are a great focus for mindfulness and improving mental health.
In January 2024 Andrew was agreed by Battle Town Council as the Town’s Tree Warden. In April, at the Annual Parish Assembly, his role was launched in a presentation and residents were asked to sign up if interested in hearing more and being involved in Tree matters in the parish.
In Andrew’s own words he sees the role of the Tree Warden as the roots and trunk holding up the branches of the many aspects of the role. He is keen to share the vision and engagement so that a group of Tree Champions will be the eyes and ears for the welfare of trees in the various neighbourhoods of Battle.
